Mission 1 "Intercepting A Strange Signal"

Fresh from the shipyards at Al Shauda, the RVH Venture sets out on its first mission, which turns out to be anything but routine. Some where out in the depths of space the Venture picks up a strange signal? What will this mean? Only time will tell. Rated: PG-15

Iana nodded in acknowledgment to Captain Mnheia and transferred command to her Science console. Iana looked at the communications and helm officers to confirm their acknowledgment as well. She noted the questioning looks on both their faces.

There was something strange going on here on board the Venture Iana thought. Iana was not pleased with the situation that had just transpired she didn't like to be out of the loop.

"Klingon’s ... thought Iana with irritation. Besides aggression and honor …we now have subterfuge and mystery in the mix … what is going on…….."?

"I could initiate a deep computer search," thought Iana.

Iana had no doubt that she could find information on the Etam, she had done it before... found information that wasn’t supposed to be available.

"The Captain didn’t forbid it … it is after all my department’s duty to find the scientific answers."

Iana hesitated though ... and with her mere hesitation a part of her became angry.

"I shouldn’t have to hesitate when seeking a scientific answer but I feel that there is something more to this Klingon Ship situation. I feel strongly that Nizzal is angry and her anger is somehow being directed at me. She hasn’t said anything specific … but I do trust my gut feelings, after all my gut has saved me in countless situations. I need to speak with the Captain and Nizzal and see just what is really going on."

"What is the status of the Klingon vessel," Iana asked the helm officer?

"They are holding at the moment … Their shields are still up and weapons are off-line." (NPC)

"Good said Iana…let me know if anything changes."

At that moment the communications officer said,

"The Klingon vessel is hailing us. They are not transmitting a visual at the moment but they appear to have visual capacity. They are "DEMANDING" to speak to the captain. (NPC)"

"Transfer the "REQUEST" to Captain Mnehia ASAP. Await her response."

Captain Mnheia listened as Nizzal explained about the IKS Etam being a heavily equipped Warbird that was on basically a scientific mission. Then she listened as Nizzal explained how the IKS Etam was ‘classified’ and also how ‘anything personal could wait’ as far as what was wrong with her. Mnheia thought this over. Slowly she made up her mind and then turned to Nizzal and spoke:

"Nizzal, I believe you are a very good officer. Your skills are top notch and for this ship at this time I could not ask for better. However please remember you are a member of Timefleet, not the Klingon Empire. You need to remember this. You need to remember that Timefleet is where your loyalties lie, not with the Klingon Empire, despite your heritage. I too am part Klingon. I am also part Romulan. This ship would be in a very sad way if I chose to hide knowledge because of certain things I had been taught about these two races. I suggest strongly that you draw on the knowledge you have learned when growing up, draw on strength you received from the Klingons. We are but a small crew. I need everyone, EVERYONE on the bridge crew to work as a team. It is impossible for everyone to work as a team if some knowledge is withheld from them. Science is an integral part of this ship. They will draw the wrong conclusions if they do not have all the facts. If you want to withhold some information from helm or communications…that if fine. But not science. Is that clear? Now, let’s go out on the bridge and see what the Klingon commander wants."

<<<<On the Bridge>>>>

Nizzal and the captain both walked out onto the bridge together. The captain nodded to communications (NPC) that they could put the Klingon commander on the main view screen now.

Mnheia walked over to the ‘Big Chair’ and sat down. Slowly the face of the Klingon commander came into focus on the main view screen.

"Greetings Commander. My name is Mnheia t’Llaiir, captain of the RVH Venture. How can we help you?"

Everyone collectively held his or her breath to listen to the answer.

<Before Captain Mnheia and Nizzal’s return>

Iana looked away from the Communications officer and began staring into her holographic display.

‘NO MORE HESITATION’… thought Iana.

Iana entered a request on her console to access any information concerning the IKS Etam…she instructed the computer to relay any and all information that could be classed as Scientific. The computer display flashed and beeped bringing up several layers of information.

‘Not a lot of data’, mused Iana, ‘considering that this is a lost ship….’
'IKS Etam……….The Bird-of-Prey……………. Various sub-classes ……………… most common light warship ……….one torpedo tube in the bow ………….. Two disrupter cannons at the wing tips. BLA, BLA BLA…I need more specific information.'
Iana quickly entered another command into her console this one requesting information including:

COVERT OPERATIONS; KLINGONS; TEMPORAL

The computer issued a request for authorization….Iana entered her pass code and authorization

LaTrell ALPHA;OMEGA 1

The computer responded;
~ AUTHORIZATION NOT ACCEPTED; YOU NEED A LEVEL FIVE AUTHORIZATION TO ACCESS THIS INFORMATION….~

Iana smiled to herself and quickly re-programmed the computer to accept her authorization.

Iana re-entered her request for information and this time the computer responded with acceptance of her authorization.

The computer displayed more information on the IKS Etam

There were several entries under the heading of TEMPORAL including entries under TEMPORAL TRACKING DEVICE and TEMPORAL SLIPSTREAM DRIVE.

‘This is very interesting…

Was the Federation tracking this ship without the Klingon’s knowing it?’

As far as general knowledge …. when this ship disappeared the Klingon’s didn’t have Slipstream Drive … I have to take into account that this information is coming out of the COVERT information database.’

Without searching any further Iana downloaded the data to her personal PADD and inserted a worm to "eat" any changes to the ships main computer authorization code database.

'I can thoroughly investigate this later’, thought Iana.

Iana looked up as she felt someone staring at her.

The Communications Officer was looking at Iana with a look that bordered between anger and astonishment

"What is it ……….said Iana………. ASAP means now!"

"I know what ASAP means replied the Com. Officer… but the Klingon is being very belligerent …….. Even for a Klingon."(NPC)

"The Captain can handle herself, replied Iana…. Remember …….. she is herself Half Klingon …

The Communications Officer quickly transferred the "REQUEST" to the Captain.

The ship was on alert.

Selia paused and studied the readout. ~ Engine functions going well. Shields at optimum efficiency. Mysterious Klingon ship nearby. ~ Selia growled inwardly. She had to keep her wits about her as she served in the Timefleet and served alongside many a Klingon. The Romulans has a long history of bitterness and strife with the Klingons and all that history was not easily dismissed.

Her assistant, a centurion named Ne'Vek approached with a padd. "The report you requested, Sub Commander.

Selia took the padd and glanced at it. "Thank you, centurion."

The Centurion walked away and returned to his duties.

Selia could not help but wonder what was going on up on the bridge. She was not one to bother the Commander unnecessarily and always remained quietly and dutifully at her post. Walking over to her main console, Selia studied the padd more closely. It was a very routine report on engine functions. The temporal displacement engines were in the last phases of their first over-haul and all was proceeding according to schedule.

Selia placed the padd down carefully and then walked around the massive engineering deck as she did everyday, to personally inspect her department. It was a good thing she were Romulan for she was always filled with great pride as she observed the efficient work of her officers.

Nizzal was almost livid. She knew quite well where her loyalties lay. It had NOTHING to do with race, but everything to do with security. So, the Captain wanted the Science officer to have full access. Fine. She turned and headed out of the room behing hte Captain, as they returned to the Bridge, her jaw set so tightly that her teeth crunched painfully together.

<<<<On the Bridge>>>>

Nizzal and the captain both walked out onto the bridge together. As soon as Nizzal accessed her terminal, she sent the same information that she had sent to the Cpatian to the Science Officer's console. her face remianed netural, but she was silently taking another chunk out of the chair she was standing next to.

The captain nodded to communications that they could put the Klingon commander on the main view screen now. Mnheia walked over to the ‘Big Chair’ and sat down. Slowly the face of the Klingon commander came into focus on the main view screen.

"Greetings Commander. My name is Mnheia t’Llaiir, captain of the RVH Venture. How can we help you?"

Nizzal looked at the face on the screen, and relaxed the breath she had been holding. It was NOT the original Captain she had seen pictures of, from her family many years ago. Perhaps it was NOT the original crew then.

The Klingon on the screen looked around at the crew. When he saw the Captain, he got a look on his face that Nizzal read as barely hidden disgust. The Klingon then gave them a dark scowl.

"I am Klang. I am First. You are the Commander of this vessel?" He scanned his viewscreen. "Your vessel does not register with any known vessel types. Our insturments show you heading for Sector 384. What business do you have there? "

Suddenly He looked off screen. He barked a command in Klingon. ["Raise Shields!"] The viewscreen suddenly scrambled for a few moments, and then slowly flickered and returned to normal. On the science and security monitors, long range scanners showed another neutronic pulse go through the sector, much small than the last one, and close to where the klingon vessel signal was coming from.

The Klingon looked back towards the viewscreen. "I ask again, what BUSINESS do you have in this sector?" he grounded out, his teeth clenched in barely contained anger.

Iana continued to look at Captain Mnheia and Nizzal, as did the entire bridge crew.

Both the women’s faces were unreadable, but the tension level on the bridge shot up noticeably. The tension was almost a physical thing and Iana felt adrenaline pouring into her body. Iana felt the muscles in her lower back tense up and she pointedly took a deep breath to calm herself.

When Nizzal reached her Security console her fingers flew across the buttons and Iana saw the in-coming message indicator blink at her station. Iana glanced at the incoming data.

"Ahh the "eyes only" thought Iana.

I can read it later…she mused. Iana focused on the center screen.

Captain Mnheia nodded at the Comm officer and the incoming hail was put on-screen. A Klingon face appeared on the screen, the visual did not include any other crewmembers. The Klingon looked at the bridge crew with disgust on his face and his eyes settled on Captain Mnheia

The captain spoke her greeting, to which the Klingon replied:

..."I am Klang. I am First. You are the Commander of this vessel?" …. "Your vessel does not register with any known vessel types. Our insturments show you heading for Sector 384. What business do you have there? "

"Klang" was almost growling at the Captain and Iana was angered by the Klingon’s lack of respect. Iana looked at the Communications officer and nodded her head, internally agreeing with the Comm. Officers earlier statement, that the Klingon was belligerent and demanding.

Iana knew Captain Mnheia could handle herself and mentally sent the Captain a vote of confidence.

The Captain did not respond to Klang immediately

Meanwhile Nizzal was standing at attention and stone faced.

Klang looked off screen for a moment and he spoke a command in Klingon. Fortunately the universal translator was working and the translation was loud and clear…. "Raise Shields…"

Iana looked at her Science station immediately and saw that there was a small Nutronic incident occurring close to the IKS Etam’s location.

Captain Klang spoke again…

"I ask again, what BUSINESS do you have in this sector?"

Iana looked to Captain Mnheia….waiting on her reply.

Captain Mnheia looked at the Klingon captain with a bit of surprise and amazement. The belligerent tone in the Klingons voice was amusing. Never the less she took a deep breath, stepped forward, looked at the Klingon and then started talking.

"My name is Mnheia t’Llaiir. I am captain of this vassal. We are part of the United Temporal Fleet of Planets and are on a peaceful mission to this part of the galaxy to retrieve anyone stranded that wanted assistance. That is why this ship is in this part of space. And you??????"

<<Klingon>>

As the Klingon was speaking Mnheia walked over to the science station and whispered in LaTrell’s ear. LaTrell, her science officer.

‘Please monitor him. Monitor his tone of voice, his attitude, everything. I also need to know why he suddenly decided to raise his shields. Send me a report ASAP. You can send this report to me via telepathy if you wish.’

Walking back to the center of the room where her ‘big chair’ was, Mnheia listened carefully to the Klingon. Mnheia decided to follow the suite of the Klingon commander and through a sequence of command buttons located on the arm of the chair she notified security that she also wanted the shields raised. Why she was not sure. Just that she felt it prudent to match the Klingon’s moves at this moment.

The ship was still. The engines were running but they were going no where. Selia walked around and carefully wiped her hand along each of the polished surfaces. The place was sparkling clean and she had expected no less.

Finished with her inspection Selia walked back to her station and turned on her monitor. The display came up and she could see the Klingon warship poised not far of the Venture's bow. It was a bit troubling.

"Are not the Klingons members of the Temporal Federation, Sub Commander?" A Lieutenant asked from behind her.

Selia nodded. "Yes, it is true. The Klingons have been a member world for centuries now. Why this one is showing aggression is…puzzling." She tapped the console and blew up the image so the entire ship filled the screen. "Klingons are so...unpredictable."

"Sub Commander?" the Lieutenant was puzzled by the comment.

Selia studied the image a few more seconds then turned it off. "I apologize. How is the upgrade coming along?"

"They are nearly completed," the Lieutenant replied.

"If need be could we engage them?" Selia knew the had engines enough to dodger the Klingon ship but she was just testing her officer to see what he would say.

"Of course. They can be engaged at any moment." He bowed his head and began to walk away.

Selia turned and cleared her throat very loudly. "I will expect them so upon my command, Lieutenant. "

The officer turned and bowed his head again. "Of course, Sub Commander."

Selia smiled a tiny smile and then handed Engineering over to the Centurion. "I shall return shortly."

The Centurion took over her post.

Selia gave one long last look at engineering and then turned to head to the bridge. She wanted to give the Commander a report in person.

Iana immediately began to scan the Klingon ship.

'The Etam doesn’t have the technology to prohibit our scans, …thought Iana'

‘That’s’ odd….his vital signs are off the scale….and this scan is set for Klingon physiology. … what is this…? Let me focus and send the Captain a message telepathically…’

~Captain…the Klingon is highly agitated…there is no wonder that his attitude is belligerent. His vitals are all registering very high. He is in an extreme state of distress….There is also a temporal shadow accompanying all his vitals…It’s as if the entire ship is enclosed in a temporal anomaly of some sort. The ship is registering as the original IKS Etam…though, according to the UTFP records this Klang is not the original Commander of this vessel. Klang is listed in the UTFP records as being an engineer. We can’t see the other bridge Crew but the ship does register as the original ship. The scans are not picking up the amount of life signs listed as being on board the Etam. Captain…Klang is thinking and responding in the wrong time…he thinks he is in the 23rd or 24th century…~

As Iana sent the message telepathically to the Captain she also transmitted the data to the entire bridge crews stations simultaneously.

The Klingon continued to grow agitated and Iana listened in anticipation awaiting Klang’s reply.

Klang rose from his chair and stared at Captain Mnheia as if he wanted to strangle her with his bare hands.

"Nizzal, if the Klingon Commander agrees to beam over I want you with me in the briefing room. I believe the sight of you will go along way to verifying what I have to say."

Then she also turned toward LaTrell and said:

"…. Prepare to be boarded"

Rick muted the signal……..

"Done Captain"…he said

Iana listened as the captain spoke to them…

Iana sent all the information down to medical anticipating that Doctor Kien the Betazoid Medical Officer might be needed in this situation.

<<RVH Venture Sick Bay>>

The sickbay was top of the line which pleased the Venture’s Chief Medical Officer inordinately. Kien was very proud to be serving in the Time Fleet. He showed it in his approach to his patients and the crew as well. He was possessed of a gentle bedside manner and his Betazoid heritage was a definite advantage in treating patients. Where the patient might feel shy or hesitant about revealing a problem, Dr. Kien could read their emotions and respond appropriately.

Doctor Kien was going over the daily reports and drinking his third cup of raktajino when the priority message came over his console. He took a few minuets to digest the new information.

"Smithers"…he called to the on-duty nurse, "the bridge has advised us that there is a Klingon Vessel some kilometers off our port bow. They seem to be encased in a temporal anomaly."

Dr. Kien quickly briefed Smithers on the current situation.

"We no doubt will be needed to examine the crew … that is if the Captain can get them over here without to much trouble. We need to be ready for any situation. "

Dr. Kien picked up a PADD from his desk and quickly scanned it.

"We have two patients in sickbay at the present. They both can be discharged immediately. I was going to release them today anyway. Lt. Conner’s leg is sufficiently healed for him to return to duty.

Next time Conner’s decides to go rock climbing … leaving the safety controls on at a level where a sudden fall will not break bones.. would be advisible. Everyone is prey to the force of gravity.

Our only other patient is Ensign DeForga who suffered second and third degree burns while preparing a meal.

They both can be safely discharged."

Kien looked up from the padd….

"Smithers, Check on the EMH and apprise him of the current situation…though I suspect he will already know…. He is always monitoring the ships communications. He is in Holodeck three…. Re-enacting the Nu_ Maneuver he is determined to set a new record…His latest hobby is Aviation you know."

"Doc, ………. The communication data says that the Klingon vessel….the IKS Etam is a lost ship….their Commander apparently thinks they are in the 23rd or 24th century. This could get ugly."

"Yes Smithers…… it could…. But we are going to be as prepared as we can be………. Right?"

"Copy that Doc" she said with a confident smile as she turned to complete her assigned duties.

The Klingon did nothing less then roar his answer to Mnheia about coming on board the RVH Venture.

"Me? Come aboard your ship? And accompanied only by security guards? I will come aboard your ship, but it will not be as your ‘guest’. It will be as nothing less then a conquering hero of the great and mighty Klingon Empire! You can make any ‘explanation you wish from where you are. I will then give you only moments to make the necessary arrangements that will allow us to board your ship and take over command!"

"Very well," started the captain, "if you wish I will tell you why your current behavior is not necessary."

She took a deep breath and looked the Klingon commander directly in the eyes and then proceeded.

"The Klingon Empire went to war some time ago with the Federation. It was a long and terrible war with casualties, many causalities on both sides. Because of the high cost of the war in both resources, men and woman, a peace treaty was worked out between the two governments. A solid peace treaty that gave the Klingon Empire everything they wanted and allowed them to save face and honor. The same could be said for the Federation. Today we explore the galaxy together and freely exchange information. Your ship, we believe has been caught in a space/time loop. Your ship it appears has been saved intact and yet you believe that it is over 75 years ago. You are unaware of the treaty between our two governments and the peace we have lived in for many years. If you wish you can contact the Klingon High Command to verify this. After you have done this we would be happy to help you in what ever way you feel is necessary to adjust to these times."

Everyone just looked at the Klingon commander and waited for his next move. The commander seemed to be caught completely off guard by the Captain’s speech and the look on his face changed from astonishment to anger to disbelief.

"Even if your little story is true, and I doubt it, it will take over 2 months for the Klingon High Command to received our transmission with us being out here almost at the rim."

"That is one thing that has improved over the years," said Mnheia, "communications. We can send communications several times the speed of light now. If you send a message to the Klingon High Command you will have an answer back in about 10 minuets!"

"I will send the communication," said the Klingon Commander from here. "I will reopen communications as soon as I get a reply."

"Excuse me Commander, but it wound be best if you gave my communication officer the message you desire to send as well as the frequency you want to send it to. You see, not to long ago all of the ships in the Federation and Timefleet had to undergo a re-haul of the communication’s department to accommodate the faster transmissions. Your communication’s department has not undergone that change. It would be best if our communications send the message exactly as you wish or you will be waiting those 2 months for a reply rather then the 10 minuets!"

Everyone, especially ensign Rick Toll of communications turned and looked at the view screen and waited.

"Let me," started the Klingon, "get the message together and I will transmit it to you communications officer. I do hope for your sake that the story you told about the Klingon and Federation being at peace is true. For if it is not, if it turns out to be a lie……"

She frowned slightly. Klang had already introduced himself as First officer. So..what happened to the rest of the crew, she wondered to herself.

Klang rose from his chair and stared at Captain Mnheia as if he wanted to strangle her with his bare hands.

["PEACEFUL MISSION!"], growled Klang, ["YOU may be on a peaceful mission…but WE are not at peace with YOU. The UTFP…"]. Klang spat the words out…["You are our enemies. Drop your shields and prepare to be boarded."]

She took a deep breath and looked the Klingon commander directly in the eyes and then proceeded to explain to Klang that the Klingon empire was not in a 'working' peace with others in the quadrant. She also told them about being caught within a time loop. Klang's facial movemnts became quite interesting to watch, as he went from astonishment to anger to disbelief.

["Even if your little story is true, and I doubt it, it will take over 2 months for the Klingon High Command to received our transmission with us being out here almost at the rim."]

Nizzal tried not to laugh. She guessed the Klang's viewscrew didnt let him see as well, as theirs.

A few momnets later, a coded message was transmitted to the communications officer, from their ship. It shouldnt take long now, for them to find out the truth.

It didnt. The Communications officer quickly sent the coded message. Nizzal bet that the High Council was suprised, to see such an old cold suddenly show up on their screens.

A reply was equally quick in comming. As Klang read the message, he kept his face carefully neutral. She could imagine what he would be feeling right now. She wondered how they would react to such a message.

It didnt take long. Klang threw the datapad accross the bridge. ["Well. It seems as if you are correct. But do not think, that because the Empire says you are no longer Enemies, that I agree with their views on the matter."] Klang thought about his current situation. It did not look good. This pervious commander had doubts about the council being able to maintain the Klingon way. And now, it seemed that that is precisely what had happened. Time anomolies or not. Klang decided that he needed to find out more about his new 'friends', before he determined his next course of action. He leaned back in his chair, as a few idea formed in his mind.

["Captain, since it seems that you are indeed correct, then I would like to take your offer up for bloodwine. I would like to know more, of this new...'order'."]

Selia made her way through the complex maze of corridors and lifts that would lead her to the Son'Na class ships bridge. What pleased her was the lack of explosions of vibrations on the ship as it told her the Klingons were not firing upon them. However Selia could not know the full drama that was unfolding on the bridge and she would soon see how perilous the situation really was.

< Bridge >

Selia stepped out of the lift and onto the bridge. Immediately she saw the large imposing face of the Klingon Commander upon the viewscreen.

"Let me," started the Klingon, "get the message together and I will transmit it to you communications officer. I do hope for your sake that the story you told about the Klingon and Federation being at peace is true. For if it is not, if it turns out to be a lie…"

Selia watched the drama unfold. There seemed to be a standoff. Why was the Klingon so belligerent?

Selia paused. She looked over at Commander Mnheia and wondered if her trip here hadn't been a mistake after all. ~ I could have easily told the Commander the news from Engineering. Why did I come here? ~
Selia took one step and then hesitated again. This was not like her at all. She finally summoned up more courage and approached the Commander from behind. She cleared her thought. "Excuse me Commander," she whispered. "I hate to disturb you."

Selia took one step and then hesitated again. This was not like her at all. She finally summoned up more courage and approached the Commander from behind. She cleared her thought. "Excuse me Commander," she whispered. "I hate to disturb you."

Upon hearing the words the captain quickly spun about to see her new chief engineer standing and looking at her.

"One moment please," said captain Mnheia to Selia. Turning back to the screen, Mnheia address the Klingon Commander.

"We would be happy to have you transport over and join us in Bloodwine. Perhaps we can clear up any more misunderstandings as well. My communication officer would be glad to give you the coordinates to our transporter room. We will be looking forward to meeting you there in a few minuets."

With that said the captain turned to the communication officer and nodded her approval of his giving and receiving any necessary data to safely see the Klingons to the Venture. Then turning back to the engineering officer Mnheia said:

"Now, how can I help you? And would you like to join us in a glass of Romulan Ale while the Klingon’s drink Bloodwine?"

It was obvious that Mnheia was happy. Happy that the situation with the Klingons seemed to have made a turn for the better. Happy that the communication officer had been so helpful. Happy to see the chief of engineering—a familure face—a Romulan face! A face she could trust. Klingons, because of her heritage she could partially understand, but a Romulan she could trust! A Romulan she could appreciate.

"Oh and let me start this conversation out by informing you that a report from a fellow Romulan is never a bother. OK?" Mnheia said to the surprised look of the engineer.
