Chapter Eight "Making the Way to Peace"

ON:

< USS Pulverizer, In the year 2460 >

Quote:

[One Minute to Explosion] The computer reported.

Glenn and Boranon dove into their escape pod and hit the eject button. With a violent jolt, the escape pod was ejected at high speed out and away from the Pulverizer. The two held their breath. All the escape pods were still close to the Pulverizer, would they get far enough away in time?

Boranon leaned close to her observation window and what she saw frightened her even more. As it began to rip apart, something else also engulfed the Pulverizer. It was like a cloud, a…fog, a something indescribable and then there was the flash. When the shock wave hit both Glenn and Boranon were tossed about the life pod like potatoes in a loose sack.

The escape pod went spinning end over end and Glenn reached out instinctively for the emergency beacon. [To any and all Federation ships in the area…this is Escape Pod number 001 from the USS Pulverizer. Assistance is needed at once.]

It was a wild ride. Boranon felt herself impact with the sides of the pod on several occasions she could just count the bruises forming in her minds eye. Like the rippled effect of a stone upon the water, the explosive force instantly caught up with the distressed Romulan ship that had caused the whole affair.

The singularity in its engines added to the force of the explosion and Pods were scattered in every direction under the sun. But more than the life pods, for the Jem Haddar and Romulans were also caught in the wake of the blast and those ships soon met their fate. The Jem'Haddar who saw escape as weakness, died in their ships. Those Romulans, who could, managed to man their own life pods before their Warbirds were sent into oblivion.

The singularity combined with the explosion tore a very large hole in the fabric of space-time and all the pods were sucked in like so many leaves subject to a storm. Then it was over….or was it?

< Portal Complex, 31st Century Gibraltar >

KaRae ran into the Portal complex and was almost immediately met by Judson Smith.

"I see you got the message?" Judson said.

KaRae followed the Timecop up the stairs. "Yes, I did. The court is in recess for a while so good time to see what's going on."

KaRae and Judson arrived on the second floor and quickly found their way to the Task Force Room. Eugine was already there with the new Archivist. There was a brief introduction and then they immediately moved on to the business at hand.

"What have you got?" KaRae asked as she stared down the floating time-line map.

The Archivist tapped a few controls and then zeroed in on the troublesome time module, which floated in the grid like a balloon. "As you know Governor, there was an attempt by someone to penetrate the Portal complex without the proper codes. The wormhole failed just moments before finalization and who or whatever it was, was killed."

"Yes, I know," KaRae said.

"I thought for the longest time it might have been one of the lost time cops or liaisons trying to get through, but I guess not," Eugine said sadly.

The Archivist went on. "This node lies in the late twenty-fifth century.

Temporal coordinates coincide with the old Neutral Zone that used to exist between the United Federation of Planets and the Romulan Empire."
KaRae studies the node. "OK, so then what?"

The Archivist rubbed his hands together. Then, moments after the failed wormhole this anomaly appeared." He pointed to the place in the timeline where the USS Pulverizer was destroyed by the singularity. "Then, here, twenty seven years later the events concludes with a twist."

"What do you mean?" KaRae asked.

The Archivist made a few adjustments on the display. "Well, we do know that this timeline is vital to the founding of Gibraltar, what had happened however is something we did not expect to see. A long extinct race known as the Husnock have reappeared in the timestream here in the year 2487."

"The Husnock were a violent race," Maxwell said. "Their renewed presence could wreck havoc in our time for sure."

Judson shook his head. "I think they must have already. I have done some research and found a few from an unknown race were mixed among the Borg dead. I think some may have been Husnock."

KaRae's heart sank. ~ Just what we do not need now. ~

<PORTAL COMPLEX>

Eugine studied the pads in front of him and didn’t like what he saw. On his time on the Equinox, they once came up against a Husnock Dreadnought, and the immensely powerful ship the Premonition class was, it barely managed to survive the encounter, to say that he wasn’t visibly disturbed by this was an understatement.

"What forces do we have at our disposal should the Husnock decide that they are willing enough to face us again?" Eugine asked ready the status report on the no offline Temporal Reactors.

"Mr. Maxwell, that would be under the assumption that we had forces to spare in this encounter, all that is left of the Timefleet is the Victory and she is on assignment." KaRae replied.

"Damn, that makes this rather difficult. Ma'am what do you want me to do? I can ask around my old Temporal Fleet contacts, get a hold of my old Chain of Command in the Omega Squadron, maybe rustle up some of the ships mothballed up in Eminence since the last war, and get them sent out here to guard the planet until the Timefleet has a chance to rebuild itself." Eugine stated. "I know a lot of these ships have been inactive for a while, but what other choice do we have at this point in time?"

James received the message from Eugine about the portal and decided he best go over there and find out what was going on. He hurried out of the security offices and made the short journey to the portal complex.

~Must be something bad I can sense a great loss.~

He walked in to find Ka'Rae there and the new archivist looking at the temporal streams.

"What do we have then?"

He looked at the display and listened to Eugine explain what had happened.

"Well as you know, the USS Pulverizer which was destroyed by a singularity sent its crew in escape pods and they were pulled through a wormhole bringing them into the future. Now as you know they were a vital part in the founding of Gibraltar. Now the strange thing is that the long extinct race called the Husnock have re-appeared in the year 2487. Though we don't know the reason for it happening."

James thought about it before replying.

"This is very strange indeed. Have there been any immediate effects in our time line today?"

"Not that we can pinpoint as of yet but it cause a problem in the future and change the course of history."

The Archivist spoke up.

~I guess this means we will be off again.~

"Do you have any suggestions as to what we can do to rectify this fault? I mean the only way is to directly analyse it with temporal scanners but to do that we would have to be in the correct time and place. The only thing is that we don't know whether it was before the Pulveriser was destroyed or after."

He said to Ka'Rae.

KaRae listened as Eugine spelt out his idea.

"I know a lot of these ships have been inactive for a while, but what other choice do we have at this point in time?" Eugine concluded.

KaRae studied the timeline. "Well, we have to do something."

The Archivist adjusted the readout to show more detail. "Clearly someone or something has 'hitched' a ride on this temporal event. The Husnock are not supposed to be here in our time-line. "

KaRae traced out the fine floating lines of time with her index finger as she thought.

"Do you have any suggestions as to what we can do to rectify this fault? I mean the only way is to directly analyse it with temporal scanners but to do that we would have to be in the correct time and place. The only thing is that we don't know whether it was before the Pulverizer was destroyed or after." James White said addressing KaRae.

KaRae turned and spoke to both James and Eugine. "Gentlemen it is time for action. Being a time cop authorizes you to use any means necessary to investigate and intervene in a time fault outside of actually breaking the Temporal Accords yourself. Therefore Mister White, Mister Maxwell, I want you both to go back to this time in the 25th century and follow all leads till you can answer how the Husnock came to resurrect long after they were exterminated as a species."

"So that means I can use my old ties?" Eugine asked just to make sure.

"Affirmative. You both get ready. " KaRae. "I need you both off world within the hour."

Both men nodded.

"I will call Pirria and put her in charge of Planetary Security while I am gone," James said.

"Very well." KaRae then spoke to Judson. "You will be in charge of Temporal Security till Mister Maxwell returns."

"Will do, boss," Judson said cheerily.

James and Eugine left the Task force room to prepare for their mission while KaRae wrapped up her meeting with the Archivist.

"How much trouble is it really?" KaRae asked.

The Archivist turned off the temporal display. "Right now the disturbance is localized in our time. I can only speculate as to what it has done to our future."

"Pity we can't go and see," KaRae said with resignation.

"Yes," The Archivist returned to his desk.

When their meeting was concluded KaRae left the Portal Complex and headed back to the court just in time for the next session and witness.

James and Eugine walked out to get ready for the coming mission. James had his own equipment which he used whenever he went on a temporal mission. He walked down the corridor to his office at the top of the Temporal security building and opened up a safe on one wall. He picked up the strap he had and the lightweight coat which helped him to blend into the time period. It changed and adapted to the needs of the wearer, controlled by a panel in the jacket. As well as that he picked up his temporal scanner, his tags(used to transport things not of that period back to his one), his type one temporal phaser for self defence, his temporal database, auto-transporter and portal generator and finally his watch which had the time and full date on which had two of each of them, so one changed to the time he was in and the other stayed constant with his present.

~I think I am ready.~

He walked out of the complex and went to find Jess over at the pond just outside of New Phoenix, sitting up against a tree eating some sandwiches. He closed off his mind and walked up to her.

"Hey, missed you. I have hardly seen you since the stadium opened."

"Yeah I missed you to."

She looked him up and down.

"Are you going somewhere?"

"Yeah, I have been sent on a mission off world back to the 25th century. I don't know how long I will be gone and we leave in 40 minutes."

~Sometimes I just really hate my job but someone needs to do it.~

This had happened a few times before and she was getting used to it, but it never got easier. She would miss him a great deal. She quietly handed him a sandwich, and poured him some coffee from the thermos. "I won't have you going off hungry."

Why does it have to be right in the middle of the celebration? Wonder how long he'll be gone this time.

"Maybe I won't be gone long," he replied as he took the sandwich and she stood looking out over the pond. She took his hand and gave it a squeeze, telling him that she would be alright.

"You just be sure to come back in one piece." Every mission he went on there was a chance he wouldn’t come back, but it was his job and he enjoyed doing it, just as she enjoyed doing hers. She turned to face him, "If you are lucky you'll be back before the house is finished."

They just sat under the tree for a while, he held Jess as if it could be the last time, though in his line of work he tried to make each time feel like the last time as he never knew what to expect.

"I just want you to always remember I will always love you forever. You are the first person I think of in the morning and the last I think of at night."

Then yet again he thought of what he thought each time he was about to go on a mission.

< Ambassadorial Hall >

Thrud and the other Ambassadors were beginning to wrap up their meeting and plans for the peace conference when the message came in from the Stargate Command Complex.

=^= SGC Control to ambassador Thrud I have a message from Tatooine about the replacement ambassador I am waiting your reply SGC out =^=

Thrud quickly tapped the holo-gavel before replying. "The meeting is now over. All Ambassadors should be making their departure plans so we can meet on Alaskus IV next week at this time."

"It issss acceptable," Seethes said.

"Yes, I shall make preparations at once," Sur'tan said. "I wish to make my farewells to my friend Tu'Rok as well before I go.

Thrud nodded. "Have a safe journey."

One by one the remaining ambassadors filed out of the hall till only Thrud and Askimos were left.

=^= This is Ambassador Thrud. =^=

The SGC controller continued relaying the information. =^= Ambassador, the new Tatooine Ambassador is ready to arrive. They are just seeking security arrangements and final approval from you."

Thrud blinked thoughtfully. =^= Relay the following to the Tatooine ambassador please. The ambassador is most welcome. However most all but a few ambassadors shall be departing this day for a peace conference on Alaskus IV, which is twenty-light-years from Gibraltar. If the Ambassador wishes, they may directly go to Askalus IV and join in the conference or they may come here. Perhaps the Lieutenant Governor can greet them and get them set up instead. The choice is up to them. =^=

=^= Very well, I shall relay the message at once. Stargate command, out. =^=

Thrud was slightly torn. Perhaps it was just bad timing but the Peace conference was the greater priority. Thrud would inform the Governor's officer before departure.

"I shall be going now, my friend," Askimos shrieked.

Thrud nodded. "I shall see you in a week, then. Have a safe journey."

Askimos left then Thrud closed the chambers before departing likewise to the Asgard Embassy.

Kerrigan after the meeting was having problems with the thought of leaving Gibraltar and not having access to Master Yodan to continue her training. She was walking towards the Temple to alert Yodan to the situation and come up with a solution that both Yodan and Kerrigan would be happy with.

She later passed by a friend that she hadn't seen forever it was Jadzia Teagan, a Trill that hadn't been Joined but was able to tap into the symbiont of a Joined Trill. "Hey, Ambassador!" Jadzia called.

"Hey Jadzia, how are you?" Kerrigan replied stopping in her tracks.

"Good and you?"

"I'm fine." Kerrigan said as she thought. "Actually the Ambassadors are going to a peace conference and I'm going to the Jedi Temple to get an arrangement with Master Yodan with my training."

"Training?" Jadzia commented, "What training?"

"Jedi Training," Kerrigan stated.

"Why, and how?"

"Well I started displaying Jedi traits during the Borg Invasion and now I'm getting training to control them." Kerrigan explained

"Oh, I'll come with you."

"Ok," Kerrigan smiled, "This way."

And they were off to the Temple to chat with Yodan about the external training for Kerrigan.

out of the wormhole 2 metallic wheels suddenly emerged and then opened up to reveal that they were the latest Droideka defence droids.

After the droids were in position a wookie came out and set up position between the droids,, the last person to exit the wormhole before it collapsed was a lithe blue skinned female Twilek wearing the innermost Jedi Robes.

The Twilek Spoke in a melodic voice "good Day master Jedi I am Master Mailee Loopa Ambasador for the Republican Senate and replacement Ambasador For Tatoine".

Drachir responded " Greetings ambassador Loopa I believe you have been informed about the ambassadorial conference forthcoming " Maeleel Loopa replied " I have indeed I wish to see master Yodan and then I will prepare to leave Myself for this Conference, I take it by the fact you have a masters lightsaber and are aware of such things you are the Deputy Governor Drachir Shonthar."

She turned her head and kissed him, “I can see us together forever. While you are gone I’ll be think of you as I bury myself in work.” Every time he had left on a mission she always found more things to do than normal. Forever is a long time, but sometimes it doesn’t seem long enough. There were times when she had thought that she would never feel this way towards anyone, but here it was.

There was a song that came to her mind now and then, one that she had heard somewhere, but wasn’t sure where or when. It went something like;

There is more to life than what you're living. So take a chance and face the wind. An open road and a road that’s hidden, brand new life around the bend. There were times, I lost a dream or two, found the trail, and at the end was you. There’s a path you take and a path not taken. The choice is up to you my friend. The nights are long but you might awaken, to a brand new life, brand new life, brand new life around the bend.

The words seemed to better suited for a poem than a song. She had always thought that this was just some silly song from long ago, one lost among other songs that had more meaning to them, but in the past few months she had come to realize how true the words were. She knew that no matter what James would always be there.
