Background: Mary Toree died in childbirth while giving birth to Devon. His father was an alcoholic, and after a severe beating that left Devon with the scar on his left cheek, he was taken away from his father and placed in foster care at the age of 12. Not finding much agreement with any foster parent, Devon moved from one foster home to another. He found his peace in his studies, focusing on schoolwork to the point of self-neglect. At age 18, he lived on his own, attending the University of Illinois, majoring in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he became swiftly bored at a job in a building firm in Chicago. He applied to Starfleet Academy, and was accepted.
Personal notes: Devon is not the easiest person to get along with, due to the emotional damage of never knowing his mother and having an abusive father. He becomes very focused when studying or working, and becomes irritable when interrupted. He is not a social person, and has had few friends in his life. He became very good at Chess, achieving the level of Master. Any friends that could have been made among fellow chess players, however, were too much viewed as competition for Devon to become close to them.
