Background:

Being born and raised among the farm country of Wisconsin, Rick has always had a love for plants and growing things which, unlike his father, included more than just those that produce food. Although not too encouraging on the matter, Rick’s father was tolerant of the flower garden that Rick grew around their yard, particularly because Rick’s mother enjoyed them.

Doing excellently in his biology classes in High School, Rick went on to earn a degree in Horticulture. Although part of his career was spent doing flower cultivation in greenhouses, he found that he preferred the unpredictable nature of working outdoors, and it was an extension of this preference that brought him to Sargas IV, as after a lifetime of working on Earth, he had found that too predictable as well, and decided to try his hand at horticulture on another planet.

When word reached him of a new colony, Rick was quick to volunteer, though it took some doing to convince his wife to come with him. He worked as First Town’s Horticulturist for four years, and then retired to live out a quiet life. When he got bored, which only took about a week, he took a position as Groundskeeper for the SGC.

Personal notes:

Despite having worked for Stargate Command as Groundskeeper for Stargate Command since the latter part 2491, Rick has only a general idea about the Stargate, describing it as: “You step in the funny-looking pool, and somewhere reappear in another one a long ways away.” His desire for knowledge on the subject is equally low. His attitude towards most technology is that he doesn’t care how something works as long as it does. The only area in which this differs is with regards to the equipment he uses in his work, including his work vehicle, chemical spreaders, etc, which he is stubborn about taking care of himself.

Rick is referred to affectionately by SGC personnel as “Beaver”, for his borderline-obsessive dedication to keeping the compound clean of fallen branches and twigs from the trees around the compound. This is, of course, done on orders from Colonel Hackworth, so such behavior is well tolerated.
